Merchandising & Transportation Development Program

Gain hands-on experience in our grain handling and merchandising business by participating in sourcing, selling, and shipping Canadian grains and oilseeds to domestic and international customers around the world.

The ideal candidate will have: 

  • Completed a business (or international business), agribusiness, or supply chain degree program.

  • Enthusiasm for international business, merchandising, and transportation.

  • Exceptional communication skills and a strong aptitude for interpersonal interactions.

  • Initiative and is adept at managing multiple priorities.

  • Additional language skills such as French, Spanish, or Mandarin (valued but not a requirement)

  • Negotiation skills

Graduates of the program will be well positioned for future career growth within Richardson to take on progressive responsibility in transportation and merchandising of grain and oilseed commodities and products to customers around the world.

Program Details

Program participants are assigned a mentor to support them through the program and receive a tailor-made experience gaining exposure to a variety of areas of the business.

Participants often begin the program in our transportation department in a supply chain functional area rotation like truck traffic or logistics. More complex rotations can include areas such as shipping railcars to the port or in our marine department preparing export documentation for ocean cargo shipments.

Supply Chain Functional Area Exposure

Logistics

Coordinate the delivery of trucks to customers or internal processing facilities. 

Truck

Support the execution of purchase and sale contracts. 

Rail

Planning and delivery of grain railcars to customers, port terminals, and internal processing facilities to meet sourcing and sale requirements. 

Marine

Administer and execute bulk grain merchandising sales by ocean from port terminals to customers around the globe. 

Some program participants may have the opportunity to learn other areas of the business to gain a broader understanding of Richardson. â€‹

Examples of these work rotations are: 

  • Sourcing, shipping, and selling locally grown grains in a Regional Merchandising office.

  • Purchasing, marketing, and programming crop input product lines (seed, crop protection, and fertilizer) to rural Ag Business Centres.

  • Working at a rural Ag Business Centre with the sale and delivery of crop inputs to grain farmers to grow their crops and at harvest, buying grain to ship to customers.​
